This is another excellent (and we do mean excellent) SADF surplus item. We’ve seen a lot of military hats come through our warehouse, but nothing is quite like the “bush” hat. This is the first “recce”-style cap we’ve ever had the pleasure of wearing for any period of time (and boy have we enjoyed them).

The cut of the bush hat is similar to the boonie we all know and love, except the brim is stiff, downward sloping, and slightly oval. This shape offers the unique benefit of thoroughly breaking up the silhouette of the wearer while noticeably increasing the level of sun protection afforded to the neck and face. The thicker, angled brim also handles rain and foul weather without bending or blowing away, and it is easily stowed with snaps on the sides of the hat.

Heat venting rings in hat and brim
Webbing lines base of lid, fits cigars and fingers well
Both sides of brim can snap upwards to lid of hat

Sizing

Measure the widest circumference around the top of your forehead where the lip of the hat would rest.

Condition

All hats are unissued and still in the original plastic packaging.

Fantastic

The hat fits magnificently. I have an unfortunately big head and finding hats that fit well is a bit of a nightmare. The hat is initially very stiff but putting it through the wash improves the fit tenfold. I work in the lumber/building materials business in Arizona, and I’m regularly out in the sun. This hat keeps the sun out of my eyes and off my ears. I wholeheartedly recommend this product.

Nice hat, painted a fence in it shirtless. Burnt my shoulders but neck protected.

Bought to accompany the matching shirts I found i used it a lot in the snow last winter. It also got some use in the garden when doing boring boomer/grown up tasks of painting fences and mowing the lawn. The hefty flaps protected my neck well and enhanced my hearing to sound in front of me, giving me the tactical edge I need when seeking out another coors lite.

Just a fun hat to wear and attempt to style into different looks before you decide you cant get it right and you look like failed pirate so you wear it as intended normally.

Mine is size 62 and fits my massive head nicely. I went slightly larger than I thought I'd need as I have a lot of hats that cut in if I buy "one size fits all".

SADF Bush Hat

One of the two things I wish I still had from my time in the SADF are my Bush Hat and my boots. I bought a size 62 because I have a big head. Gotta be able to fit all that brain! It fits perfectly and is even made in my home town of Durban. It's a bit creased from all these years but time and use will manage to work that out I'm sure. I'll likely be the only person hiking around in this part of the world (Arizona) in one of these. Very happy with the purchase and it turns out it fits my wife perfectly too so I'll be buying one for her soon as well.

The legendary bush hat

Bought this to go along with the rest of my SADF kit. It's a cool hat, but as others have said it's got a sorta permanent crease to it. But I can't knock it for that reason as that's totally acceptable for something thats been in storage since 1985.

Hat fits quiet large on me since I wasn't able to buy my correct size, but I couldn't pass it up as these are so hard to find in the US. Don't do what I did by expecting it to shrink in the wash, it only served to make the brim of that hat more difficult to pin up the sides and make the awesome vintage label fall off :(

Overall great hat for a collector or somebody that just wants a cool bush hat.
