Swiss Issue Forest Axe
Swiss Issue Forest Axe
Swiss Issue Forest Axe

The big brother of the Swiss Issue Forest Hatchet, these axes should feel familiar, albeit sporting a beefier handle and an aesthetic lumberjack axe head. Clocking in with an overall length of twenty-three inches and a weight of five pounds, these axes strike a beautiful balance between power and portability.

Condition

Every axe is unissued, guaranteed—so you'll be the first to swing this axe around while listening to Huey Lewis and the News. This is reflected in their stellar condition, though you may want to sand and coat the handle, as they come a tad rough from the factory.

Is axe

It's an axe, it cuts things well. Hasn't broken yet.

A two-handed Axe

It's swiss and it works. It smelled weird, and I recommend applying a nice coat to the wood to help it last longer and to keep the smell from bothering your nostrils. it chops wood fine, it smacks stakes fine, and it hammers nails fine. It's great at what it does (being an axe). Yep just an axe with a cool red head so it looks cooler and makes you swing faster. The wood handle is holding up and hasn't broken, but it's easily replaceable if it does.

I do some farming here and there, so I'm no bushcraft master, but I'm not amateur gardener.

Axe-ual Swiss Craftsmanship

Good, sturdy handle and head that doesn't seem like it'll fly off. It needed sharpening, but I knew that when I bought it.

This thing is sharp!

Made quick work out of a tree in my yard. Now I somehow grew a beard and can only wear flannel shirts. Lumberjack/10

A Serious Axe at a Seriously Good Price!

First and foremost, it's important to mention that this is essentially a full size axe with a shortened handle. If you haven't swung an axe before, I would HIGHLY advise you to look into axe techniques/safety so you don't accidently end up with this thing chopping your foot, leg, groin, etc.

I bought this to supplement a few other wood cutting tools that I own and to take camping. When I'm not camping, I use this to split firewood for my backyard firepit and do yard work.

A few initial observations:

-Out of the box the edge on this will certainly cut but it's not sharp. If it's not sharp enough for your application then you'll need to do a bit or work. I had to do a few passes on each side of blade with my belt sander to get it beveled to a nice edge and then I finished it on my paper wheel to give it a honed finish.

-The lacquer/coating they used on this axe STINKS. Very strong chemical smell and it transfers to your hands. This has been in my garage for a few weeks now and, while it has "aired" out some, it still has moderate smell to it. NOT a deal breaker but it's definitely not easy on the nose.

All in all, this is a great axe at a great price. It's a bit heavy so, if you plan on packing this around, make sure you account for the weight. Otherwise, this would go great in a vehicle or as a supplemental cutting tool around the house.

Buy with confidence.
