Bundeswehr FR Top Base Layer
Bundeswehr FR Top Base Layer
Bundeswehr FR Top Base Layer

To put it simply - these are some of the most comfortable underlayers we've ever put on. They're also not truly complete unless you get the set.

The Bundeswehr hit it out of the park when it comes to a comfortable FR base layer — yes, Fire Resistant. It's an extremely soft blend of synthetic wool and FR-treated Viscose (an alternative to silk) that will wick sweat, stay cool, and prevent burns.

If you haven't got the idea in your head already, the ability to have FR underlayers means that you don't have to worry as much about getting the rest of your gear in FR fabrics (read: expensive). If you're a surplus fanatic, this is huge — you can layer these underneath rest assured you're protected from open flames while still rocking your old gear. Hell, some modern gear doesn't even boast the same protection — your buddy who insisted on the multicam black tactical pants might have those melted to his skin since they weren't FR...

Naturally, we put the FR rating to the test with a 3700 degree Fahrenheit flame from a MAPP gas torch — we were pleasantly surprised with the results.

From left to right, you can see how much we tortured the fabric. It took a considerable effort just to burn a hole into these with a very hot flame. The hole you're seeing on the right isn't the result of it catching aflame (it pretty much extinguished immediately after we took our torch off of it), but rather it charring and breaking apart with no damage to the material behind.

They're a formidable underlayer during the colder months and a great compliment to other FR gear.

The undershirt is extra long to allow for ease of tucking in with extra slack. Expect these to hug your body a bit.

As a standard disclaimer for all FR products, we are not responsible for any injuries or bodily harm that you get while wearing this. These are surplus so they are by no means guaranteed to perform as designed. Stay safe and stay smart around heat, fires, and electrical hazards.

A tad bit bigger than expected, but keeps you nice n toasty

I got a medium size for these and they fit more like a large. The sleeves are a little baggy, but if you're wearing a long dress shirt or larp in your favorite setup, it's not an issue. For curiosity's sake I tried out the pants liners with my normie cargos from the normie store and surprisingly they work! I haven't tested the FR part though, and I don't think I will.

Cozy

The waistband lost elasticity the minute I washed it (cold water, if that matters). I'll take to mean I'm an idiot and failed to recognize that this may be dry clean only. Or hang dry only. In any case, it's still comfortable and warm.
