This is the Austrian Gore-Tex Hardshell — Built for the harshest heights of the alps, and torrential downpour in the Jungle. This is the shell everyone at KommandoStore has in their trunk.

Designed and produced under contract by a high-end Austrian ski-wear company, This is about as nice as it gets short of an Arc'Teryx LEAF Alpha Jacket (but we'd be sued into the ground if we told you that this is nearly the same thing for nearly 90% off. Which it totally isn't. We'd never say that.)

Featuring a PTFE Gore-Tex membrane, it keeps everything inside it perfectly dry for an extended period of time. Unlike a windproof jacket, the membrane doesn't "soak through" when it comes in contact with moisture of any kind, be it rain or snow (which the Austrians see quite a bit of).

The tuckable hood is extra large to accommodate helmets, and features a tidy shock cord arrangement that doesn't dangle or get caught up & snag on all the rest of your gear. It also has a shock-cord adjustable crown for properly fitting to heads & helmets large and small.

The 'napoleon' chest pockets are extremely large, making it an EDC machine. Phone, wallet, keys, and also large enough to comfortably hold another piece of Austrian engineering without any majorly suspicious shapes bulging out.

Amazing jacket

It's far superior to the level 6 Goretex issued by the US military for a fraction of the price as well as it just looks far more esthetically pleasing with more protection from the rain, wind, and cold

Just a Good, Solid Jacket

Feels like a perfect marriage between the eternal ruggedness of the M-65 and the moisture-wicking performance of those obnoxiously fluorescent hardshells you'd shell out untold sums for at REI. As someone who is neither a fan of looking like a neon popsicle nor having my $200 outerwear frayed to shreds in a few seasons, I can't praise this garment enough.

I've worn this while cycling through quite a few downpours this winter with temps roughly around 40-50F. The jacket performs like it was designed for the task. I spent more than 5 hours in a windstorm earlier this week with gusts of 60mph without getting any detectable windchill whatsoever once I cinched up all of the Anzug's drawstrings.

The main drawback with most field jackets is their questionable suitability for anything involving a lot of perspiration. I've successfully worn this jacket while both running and cycling. It's preferable to my Salomon in several regards, though sweat can start condensing on the insides once temperatures climb to 60F+.

The hood can be adjusted to fit over a helmet if needed, but you can also cinch it in to be the size of a normal hood. Bonus points for not having the pointy bit on the M65 that makes you look like a klansman or a death eater. The hood even comes with a visor to keep rain off your face, a seriously underrated feature that I didn't know I needed.

Usually I size milsurp down a size, but I actually went down two sizes for the Austrians and I still have enough room for…

The pockets are bigger on the inside

Absolutely loving this jacket. Like to wear it with the german parka liner, or a hoodie, or whatever. Should be nice standalone for some summer rain as it is fairly light weight, but leaves room for layering for the cold months.

Gortex seems to be holding up well, it's seen a bit of rain since i got it and the water beads up pretty nice. Havent gotten it soaked yet tho so cant speak to that.

Definitely seems to run big, so i'm glad i sized down, and still have room for some layers even.

Oh yea, and the napoleon pockets are huge. Like, unreasonably so. The pockets alone are worth 5 stars. They can nearly fit a whole bfr each. So that's pretty cool.

weird austrian zipper

It definitely seems like you're meant to wear layers under it, because the 88-92 size I got felt almost too big for me (88cm chest size).

The zipper configuration is a little weird, at least on the particular one I got. There are two zipper pulls and they're both stopped on each end of the zipper so that the sides cannot be fully separated; always linked by at least the length between where the two zippers are positioned. In effect this makes it a pullover, which can be a mild inconvenience, so I'm not really sure what the Österreichers were thinking there to be honest.

Nice parka

It’s a nice parka, it’s a bit oversized for a medium, but the color looks great and is very subtle in either outdoor or urban environments.
