GERMAN BUNDESWEHR FLECKTARN SYMPATEX PARKA

We're not sure if the Germans have started burning these too, but we really hope not. The flecktarn SympaTex parka is the hardshell first cousin of the classic cotton/poly flecktarn parka you know and love. It wears hard, while being light enough to wear in the summer.

SympaTex is a fabric/membrane that is both water and windproof, but allows water-vapor to flow through. It's very similar to American GoreTex, but originates from a European parent company. SympaTex is widely used across Europe in sports and recreation gear, and has had considerable success winning military contracts.

TL;DR It's a damn good waterproof shell in Flecktarn.

Specs

  • German flecktarn pattern on delicious weatherproof SympaTex membrane
  • Zippered main closure with snap-secured double storm flap.
  • Two roomy low-front snap-secured pockets
  • Hook and loop fabric for nametape, patches on both shoulders, and tightening cuffs.
  • Cinch cord in hood and at bottom of parka "skirt" (that's what that part is called, apparently).

 Type

Flecktarn comes in two color versions.

  • Pre-2005: The five color pattern everyone thinks about when they hear flecktarn: vibrant and robust.
    • Pre-2005 variants: Sometime during the 90s, Germany was in high demand for BDUs, so it contracted a handful of different companies for manufacture. Construction is identical, but color is not. With the amount of different batches being produced by different printing equipment, the tone of the five colors varies from company to company.
  • Post-2005: In 2005 the five colors of flecktarn were altered into more muted tones. Since then, the colors have stayed free of variation. Every piece made since 2005 features this muted version of flecktarn.

Condition

All parkas are in like-new to very good condition, no indications of damage.

Ha, nice try weather

This parka lived up to hopes for a light weight and highly water repellent shell. On the one rare rainy day we had in Los Angeles I wore it around all night and stayed dry the entire time. The cut is a bit strange and boxy, but does allow for ease of wear over layers or a rig. The only downsides in my opinion are the lack of pockets and it's a rather noisy material.

Sizing is weird, be warned

Came in great condition, no tears or discoloration. But be warned, the sizing is strange. I'm 5'11" and I ordered the medium which fits perfectly on my arms, but hangs a little long on the torso. I understand that these sort of coats do that to prevent water/air coming up through the bottom but something to think about. I would not recommend getting the size smaller if you are my height or taller. Stick with the medium.

Channel the Fortitude of a German Soldier

A tough, but very nice looking jacket. The pre-2005 fleck is an awesome colour.

I bought a size too big (no smalls available at the time), but the extra room in the arms is nice for layering, especially if I plan to wear a lighter coat underneath. Also helps to keep heat locked in.

Will keep you free from water, and is resistant to wind.

The German flags on mine were worn out, with only the yellow bar visible.

Wear with pride.

Excellent German Quality

A really good quality jacket. Nice and lightweight, but completely waterproof. Not to mention your usual stylish Flecktarn. The one I received came in an untouched/unopened manufacturer's bag. Definitely recommended as a nice alternative to your standard/more expensive GoreTex rain jackets.

I took off one star due to a minor sizing issue: The proportions are a little strange on me. I got a size smaller (44/46) which fit fine in the chest, but with very short sleeves. I exchanged for the size I ended up keeping (48/50) however, the sleeves are still a touch shorter than I'd like while the chest is now a little on the larger side. I was afraid if I got a size larger it'd be way too big in the chest/overall length. Overall I'm still very happy with the it, and would recommend.
