Wellenbrecher 'Wave Breaker' Field Shirt

Well·en·brech·er from the German wellen “wave” and brecher “breaker.”

Each Wellenbrecher starts life as a German desert camouflage field shirt. Similar in cut and overall design to their Flecktarn cousins, these Tropentarn shirts incorporate large armpit vents, and a lightweight, three-color fabric.

Wellenbrecher's unique coloration results from a special dying process applied to each Tropentarn donor shirt. Unlike standard "over-dying," we use a reactive dye which only binds to cotton fibers. This leaves all nylon undyed from the arm vents and hook/loop to the nylon fibers in the body of the shirt itself.

Wellenbrecher's slightly iridescent blue-gray appearance is color fast and will not leach or fade. Post dying, your shirt is clear of residual chemicals and clean enough to put in a baby's mouth.

This field shirt can be worn in two different configurations. For a standard "shirt" cut, we suggest ordering your Gr. size as shown in the sizing chart. For a "jacket"-like fit, go up one height bracket in the sizing chart while keeping your chest size true to measurement.

Specs

  • Wellenbrecher Wave 2 mission patch
  • Tough poly/cotton water-resistant fabric
  • Snap-secured storm flap
  • Two snap-secured front breast pockets
  • Straps for shoulder marks, rank tabs, etc.
  • Mesh-ventilated armpits
  • Shoulder pocket on left arm
  • Velcro® wrist fasteners
  • Velcro® fastener on right arm
  • Velcro® fastener above left front pocket for name tape

Color Bias

The color of the tan in the Tropentarn affects the dye result. Not all Tropentarn jackets are the same. There is roughly a 10% difference in color ranging from light khaki to a more yellow sand. This base color effects the Wellenbrecher dye result. You can compare the photos below to get an idea of what to expect. We can make no promises as to the hue you will receive.

Ride the Wave

While the original top I recieved was too small, the second one recieved was just right, and the color was everything I hoped it would be. I recommend this to anyone who loves to have unicorn camo patterns hidden away in their stash.

Cool and unique

I really like field shirts for lightweight jackets, especially as military sizing means that I can find something that's tough, reasonably priced, AND long enough for me without being baggy. At the same time, I want to avoid the militia-wannabe look. This is a cool and creative way to avoid that while still not shying away from the obvious military surplus look. So when they were on sale, I snapped one up.

Overall, it's a great shirt/jacket, with a couple things that are still worth noting.

Fit is exactly as anticipated. Condition was excellent - if this wasn't unissued, it is certainly the next best thing.

The color on the shirt that I received was a little darker and more grey than the pictures in the listing. For my taste, this was absolutely fine and it made the undyed stitching pop even more, which I think is a positive. The dye is very uniform with no blotchiness.

I am in the habit of removing the name tape velcro from my surplus clothes. Usually this just means a small rectangle of stitching holes that may or may not disappear over time. Because my shirt also came with velcro on the right sleeve that I was not likely to ever find a patch to fit, I removed both velcro pieces and discovered that even though from the back side of the fabric it looked like the velcro had not affected the dying, once the velcro was off, there were obvious lighter spots where it had prevented the outside of the fabric from fully absorbing the dye. I figured this was a possibility before…

10/10

I use this work god tier dyeing. Very Breathable in 35C. Also makes a good going out shirt if you're into that.
