Swiss Issue Forest Hatchet
Swiss Issue Forest Hatchet
Swiss Issue Forest Hatchet

The hatchet is one of humanity’s oldest and most useful tools. In fact, primitive sharpened-rock hand axes were used by our ape-like ancestors before homo-sapiens ever walked the earth.

Today, the hatchet remains an essential bushcraft and survival tool — a small piece of metal insurance promising shelter, fire, and a good night's sleep outdoors.

Apparently, the Swiss government bought a warehouse full of these things and never used them. We just so happen to know a guy who bought that warehouse, and...

Well, we thought we'd give them a try.

Condition

From what we can tell, these hatchets are good to go with two minor exceptions:

  1. They come unsharpened for safety
  2. Once sharpened, they will need a sheath if you plan to carry one in your pack

We are actively looking for feedback on these. If you get some use out of your hatchet, please leave a review or get in touch.

Better than anything in a hardware store but smells funky

This thing is way more solid than any of the hatchets you'll find in most hardware stores unless you go the Estwing route, but those have their own issues.

I haven't gotten around to sharpening and refinishing it yet though, because the wood is treated with something that smells absolutely foul. I'm going to try washing it down with mineral spirits first because I hate handling it right now due to the stank.

Door room savior

I kept my camping gear with me at college, didn't actually get to use the axe bit but it made a pretty good hammer to fix up metal dorm bed frames.

Its alright

I was given the warehouse one, since i have special needs. After shaving off the shiny stuff on the handle and treating it with oil and wax, filing and sharpening the blade, it cuts like a champ and so far seems pretty sturdy.

Good for going innawoods.
