EAST GERMAN RAIN PATTERN SHELTER HALF

The shelter half dates from early Tsarist Russia. On first glance, it's an odd tarp-looking piece, but to call it such would hardly do it justice.

By day, it is a sort of poncho, which serves as on-demand cover and concealment. By night, it can be made into a lean-to or combined with other shelter halves to form complex tent structures.

Properly worn, it breaks up the human silhouette very effectively, especially in static positions. It excelled in this role — Russian marksmen in WWII came to rely on the shelter half for exactly that purpose.

For the regular grunt, the shelter half was also a godsend. It's light weight, low cost, and easy portability ensured every soldier could carry adequate cover into the field. It was one of the first and most important pieces of "modular" field gear.

Please see the product photos for original East-German-suggested shelter and tent configurations. Poles and guy lines for creating these structures are sold separately.

      Neater than a plash palatka

What is there to say, this thing speaks for itself. It protec, it attack, but most importantly, it covers your back. Mine came minty fresh. No bites taken out of it to stave off starvation even. One button came off when I unfolded it, but what can you expect from starving commie factory workers? I'm impressed that they had enough buttons to go around to begin with. Very happy with this purchase.
