Sought after for its fantastic performance and relatively low weight & profile, the US modular sleep system (MSS) has some of the best sleeping bag components money can buy. If you're going down into colder and colder temperatures, the Intermediate bag is the first thing you'll want to bring out.

Manufactured in the US by Tennier Industries (as with the rest of the MSS) the Intermediate bag is the warmer and denser bag in the MSS. When paired with the Patrol bag, can go down to some seriously cold temperatures (sub -10°F). And with a user wearing various layers of the ECW system and combining with other pieces of the MSS, is rated down to a staggering -50°F! Constructed out of water-resistant, non-flammable ripstop nylon for virtually worry-free durability, and stuffed with Polarguard® HV hollow continuous filament resin bonded polyester (say that 10 times fast). It features a heavy duty, self-repairing double zipper down the body that can be quickly undone in an emergency, a cinchable "hood" to aid trapping your body heat in the bag when it gets cold, and snaps to attach the other pieces of the MSS or be used in lieu of the zipper in a pinch.

As a part of the MSS, it's also very packable. Using the stuff sacks designed for the MSS, the entire 3-part system (bivy cover, intermediate bag, and patrol bag) can be compressed down to a roughly 1 cubic foot volume with ease.

It works

Slept outside in this (as a part of the full bivy sleep system) during the harsh winter storm in 4f with a -15 wind-chill. Was perfectly fine and will be 100% using this as my primary camping sleep system.

You spend 1/3 of your life asleep. Get a decent sleeping bag.

Outstanding. Arrived just in time; we had a power outage that lasted five days in 20 degree weather. We had minimal heat in one room and this bag kept me warm and comfortable when the cheapsh*t bags had broken zippers and bad insulation.

Look, just buy one. They’re made for 19-year-old kids with zero investment. Take decent care of it and it’ll outlast your grandchildren.

Great cold weather bag

I know the official Army guide says 30 and below; but I break this out if it's getting anywhere below 50. I like to be comfy. That said this bag alone will absolutely take you down to about 10 F and you'll still be nice and warm if you wear your silkies inside. Anything below that though and I recommend snapping this inside the patrol bag and using them both.
