West German Bundeswehr Sewing Kit
West German Bundeswehr Sewing Kit
West German Bundeswehr Sewing Kit

One of the most maligned and overlooked items in a soldier's equipment is the field repair kit, also known as the sewing kit. In fact, when supplies are happily humming to and from your army, most soldiers tend to just replace broken gear or torn clothing. Especially in the era of "low intensity" conflicts, the humble sewing kit has fallen to the wayside.

All of that said, knowing a few simple stitches can quite literally save your life. The human animal is a weak one when it comes to the elements. Long ago we traded comfortable fur for sleek (relatively) hairless bodies and high-performance cooling. That trade helped make the human an apex predator. It also made us incredibly fragile.

These high-quality German sewing kits date from the 1960s and contain everything you need to repair nearly any uniform. They are also dirt cheap and small enough to forget about inside a pack or sneak into a pocket. Combined with a few YouTube tutorials, you will find that you can stretch the usable life of your clothing a lot longer. Once you know what to look for, one advantage of a sewing kit is actually preventative maintenance — a loose thread or poorly secured seam can be stopped before it becomes an issue.

      Very useful

This kits is amazing, I was able to sew back on several buttons to my coats and even patch old work shirts.

It has a very strong variety of needles and a variety of thread that are good colors for just about any surplus clothing you can buy.

      Solid

A nice little packet of everything, with negligible wear to the ends of the cardboard stars used to hold threads.

      Love it, love the history

A piece of history, mine came with the East German fellows initials scribed in and an extra bag of buttons marked from a German tailor's shop. Google says where the tailor was, is now a bakery.

Best sewing kit since sewing kits.
