West German Bundeswehr Sewing Kit
West German Bundeswehr Sewing Kit
West German Bundeswehr Sewing Kit

One of the most maligned and overlooked items in a soldier's equipment is the field repair kit, also known as the sewing kit. In fact, when supplies are happily humming to and from your army, most soldiers tend to just replace broken gear or torn clothing. Especially in the era of "low intensity" conflicts, the humble sewing kit has fallen to the wayside.

All of that said, knowing a few simple stitches can quite literally save your life. The human animal is a weak one when it comes to the elements. Long ago we traded comfortable fur for sleek (relatively) hairless bodies and high-performance cooling. That trade helped make the human an apex predator. It also made us incredibly fragile.

These high-quality German sewing kits date from the 1960s and contain everything you need to repair nearly any uniform. They are also dirt cheap and small enough to forget about inside a pack or sneak into a pocket. Combined with a few YouTube tutorials, you will find that you can stretch the usable life of your clothing a lot longer. Once you know what to look for, one advantage of a sewing kit is actually preventative maintenance — a loose thread or poorly secured seam can be stopped before it becomes an issue.

      Old-school simplicity.

It has everything you need and not much that you don't. Is it modern and easy? No, not really, you're gonna have to figure out how to make proper stitches - but it's a worthwhile skill and this little kit provides what you need to do it.

The best things in life are free

I received this sewing kit as a free gift for purchasing a flecktarn jacket during a recent promotion, and as a someone who is a avid collector of Bundeswehr surplus, I was incredibly pleased to recieve a not often sold item, and to see just how much stuff was really in this thing. If you don't have any sewing supplies and you need to fix something, this is about the best five bucks you could spend.

      Get it while it's here

It has all the sewing amenities for simple repairs from light layers to heavy layers of clothing since it comes with different needle types. I've used it already a bunch of times to repair a few clothing items myself, and no man should go through life without owning at least one of these and knowing how to use it.

      Wonderful bit of kit

Bought some jackets recently that needed a little maintenance and though why not buy a matching sewing kit for the place I got them and when it arrived I was glad to see it fit in the breast pocket of my flecktarn parka definitely recommend for on the fly repairs at a moment's notice
