Vers·eng·tarn from the German versengt “scorched” and tarnen “camouflage.”
The Versengtarn parka is a tribute to the fall of a king. The German Flecktarn parka, one of the most prolific and well-loved pieces of military surplus, is no longer being sold to the public. Instead, the Bundeswehr is burning it.
Our process takes the iconic Flecktarn pattern and scorches it with a reactive dye, darkening the print and giving each piece a unique appearance. Black, but not quite black — the color of the fabric shifts in the light.
After the dye bath, the parka is washed with a binding agent, removing any residual dye. The resulting Versengtarn fabric will not leech color or chemicals — it is clean enough to put in your mouth.
Each parka is modified to incorporate a number of additional features. First a large Cordura® “poacher’s pocket” is sewn into the lower back. This style of pocket first appeared in English hunting jackets and takes the place of a small rucksack. Clever construction allows the slim, durable pocket to expand like an accordion when in use.
A second Cordura® utility pocket is sewn into the bicep of each parka and topped with a 4” x 6” hook and loop panel. We adapted the design of this pocket directly from the legendary American PCU system. We've found it works well for maps, papers, and other small-but-important things that tend to fall out of regular pockets.
Finally, Scotchlite® reflective panels are added to the skirt and wrists of the parka. Borrowing from mid 2000s German police designs, both sets of panels are easily fastened in both "deployed" and "covert" positions. This allows instant visibility when and where you want it.
