In 2021, we took it upon ourselves to do a major redesign of the P83 Chest rig to give it the upgrade it deserved, which we then dubbed the "Pattern 84". Since its introduction we've used our rig extensively in order to figure out what design improvements we would like to implement. Most importantly, this iteration focused on customer feedback first. 

While we're far from believing the chest rig is a dying breed, in fact, we think it's more popular than it's ever been. But we just can't ignore the real juggernauts of tactical gear industry. Everyone has a plate carrier. And what better place to use the universal mag pouches from the P84 2.0 Chest rig, than anywhere you want...

Fully compatible with magazines from nearly every semi-automatic rifle in common use — no inserts or addons needed.

Where We Began...

In 1983, the first well-known modern chest rig was made somewhere most people wouldn't expect — South Africa. The SADF's "Pattern 83" brought unparalleled versatility with multiple weapons platforms without the need for modification in the field.

In the age of proprietary inserts & awkward adjustments, we thought we should base a do-it-all design off of something that worked.

Mag Compatibability Guide

If you're using a popular, semi automatic magazine-fed rifle, odds are P84 fits at least 6 of your mags. Want to know for sure? We've tested dozens of different platforms and detailed our results below.

AR-15 & Other .223/5.56 Platforms

In most cases we reccomend the standard 2 magazines per cell for a total of 6 mags. This will work with nearly all metal and polymer 'AR-15 type' mags on the market. However you can chose to 'overload' each mag cell with 3 standard capacity metal STANAGs for a total of 9 magazines.

Note: When overloading, we recommend inserting magazines in a front-to-back order, Not all polymer mags are 'overload' compatible.

AR-Adjacent platforms with similar magazines such as the 30/35 rd. 5.56 Galil, HK93, G36, and others will fit at least 6 mags, but due to the contours of some of the magazines, you might find trouble stacking more than 2 in a pouch.

Longer magazines like the 40 Round Magpul PMAG and the proprietary Steyr AUG 42-Rounders will fit with a total of 6 mags in the rig. If you're crazy and use the Surefire 60-round 'quad stack', we tested that too. each mag cell can fit 1x 60 rounder plus 1 standard capacity STANAG.

Kalashnikov Platforms & Similar

Each mag cell holds 2 magazines comfortably. Standard Capacity AKM, AK101, and AK-74 Magazines will fit just fine. Plastic, metal, and Bakelite all work, and P84 2.0 makes it much easier to re-index these mags than the previous version of this rig.

We also tested 40rd 7.62 and 45rd 5.45 RPK mags. While they physically fit inside the pouches, 7.62x39 40 rounders can't take advantage of the flap closure. Retention is acceptable thanks to the elastic, but it certainly isn't a "jumpable" configuration.

It's much the same story for 5.45 45 rounders — they fit side by side better than the x39 mags, but still can't take advantage of the flap closure.

7.62 NATO/.308/6.5c "Battle Rifles" & DMRs

P84 accommodates straight walled 20 round .308 mags for the AR-10, MR308, FN FAL, and SCAR-17 without issue. The rig will comfortably fit the standard 2 per cell for a total of 6 mags. For the HK G3, due to the contours of the magazine, we don't recommend double-stacking.

We've tested the much less common SCAR & FAL 30-round magazines, and they also fit without issue, even with baseplates attached.

Pistol Caliber Carbines/SMGs

Magazines such as those found in HK MP5s, B&T GHM/APC/TP Platforms, CZ Scorpions, Grand Power Stribogs, UZIs, Colt AR-9s, and Glock 'stick' type mags will fit, but with a catch: They must be placed side by side in order to maintain retention.

The best way to run PCC magazines for maximum retention is to place 4 in each main mag cell.

Results may vary with magazine extensions and different types of base plates. Compact pistol magazines, such as those used by the Glock 19, may be too short to use effectively in P84's main pouches, but will fit in the multitool pouches if you want to carry them on your rig.

If It Ain't Broke..?

The process of modernizing a design like this is a balancing act. Change too little and there’s no benefit to the end user. Change too much and you might ruin what made the original good.


In our view, almost everything about the P83 rig was done right the first time. The philosophy of the SADF is clear, and we agree with their conclusions. We were careful not to reinvent the wheel with P84 — instead we focused on improving what was already there, and putting our customers first when considering any changes.

solid build and works well

bought this as an airsofter who just wanted to carry more mags and someone who wants to larp as an IAR gunner and well I very much plan to get more l only have 3 complaints and they aren't very major

1 it feels a little flimsy when on a battle belt when your trying to fit 3 ar mags in it but on a plate carrier its solid

2 it's a little expensive now being an airsofter I probably don't have a great price reference ability so take that as you wish

3 this thing only stays in stock in the pattern I want for an hour max, not a real complaint but I felt it noteworthy

all around I have no regrets buying this pouch and I intend to buy 3 more and the patern 84 placard so I can cary 21 mags on body and go full marine iar rifleman larp

solid mag pouch

These pattern 84 pouches are pretty solid, and they fit a real good range of mags to include 2x40rnd magpul mags pretty sure it'll do 2x42 AUG mags as well. I've been looking for a good replacement for my old school HSGI triple mag pouches and these are pretty close. The only thing I would like to see is a clip for the flap with a velcro silence. The molle attachment is pretty good not as rigid as I'm used to but it seems to be entirely functional and weaved in pretty easy. Great pouch overall.

Great Gen 1 product, room for future improvement.

TLDR, It can carry AR-15 mags, AK platform mags, Pistol caliber mags, pistol caliber pistols, smoke grenades, flashes, and other assorted party favors with no trouble at all. For 308, an other calibers, results may vary.

I was looking at the P84 placard as a solution to carry both AR-15 and 308 Pmags without having to have multiple types of gear on hand. While KomanndoStore's youtube rep assured me it could handle 25 round 308 mags with no issue. Being a skeptic at heart, I bought this pouch to evaluate. As advertised, it handles 2 5.56 mags with no issue. It took some persuasion, but I was able to get it to carry a pair of 20 round 308 Pmags. With that test passed, I moved onto the 25 rounders where a lengthy struggle ensued. After much straining and cursing, I was able to get both mags into the pouch.

The P84 pouches are designed with the velcro flap as it's primary retention system and an elastic band around the center of the pouch as a secondary retention system. My problem is that the secondary retention band works too well. While you can rest assured that your smaller mags aren't going to spill out, the elastic is simply too narrow for 308 mags. One edge of the mag will catch on either end of the band no matter how you insert them. I was able to solve this by leaving it loaded with 25 rounders for a week. Now I can index the mags by catching the band on one end of the mag and rocking it in kind of like I am loading an AK. So if you are looking at this series to carry…

Great 7.62 Pouch!

I got 2 of these to flank the P84 placard. Solid construction all around. Using them to hold 2 M1A mags. Snug fit.
