Get To Know The Rig.

A short explainer on the rig we brought back under the supervision of Niemoller himself.

The SADF Recces

South Africa’s most elite special forces are the 'Recces' (short for “Reconnaissance”).

In the border conflicts, they were the cream of the crop, being experts in both long-range combat reconnaissance and counter-insurgency. In truth though, they did far more. Recce quickly became the “go-to” fighting force for nearly everything, from airborne raids to underwater demolitions.

But they had to do it all in total anonimity. None of their uniforms or equipment could be identifiably South African. It's why you see pictures of Recces with AKs and soviet 'Chicom' chest rigs instead of R1s (Re-named FN FALs) & Pattern 70 style webbing.

For one Recce, make-shift gear wasn't quite enough. His name: Johann Niemoller.

If You Want Something Done Right...

Niemoller saw the shortcomings of the 70s-era gear of South Africa. It was more suited for fighting in WW2 than it was against the fast-moving insurgents.

Armed with a sewing machine in his bungalow room and all the fabrics, bits & bobs he could get, he designed a comfortable & applicable rig that could go long distances, quieter, with less repairs needed.

In our interview with him, Niemoller remarked, "Very soon, I had to make [webbing] for almost everybody in the special forces..."

Niemoller's very first webbing was thrown together with every flavor of fabric & buckle he had, but it showed massive promise, and would go down to be one of the most legendary non-issued belt kits of all time...

Niemoller's Rig Up Close

Reception

Niemoller's webbing was a massive success, immediately being adopted as the go-to system for the Recces and even seeing use on Private Military Company "Executive Outcomes".

The webbing would be passed to the military, where quality would drastically reduce for cost savings. Still, SANDF Recces still use a very similar design to this day.

Most versions on the market today are missing some of the key details that made Johann's creation so effective in the field.

What Was Next for Niemoller

After the Border War, Johann continued to make rigs & commercial gear, supplying clientele like Executive Outcomes.

1980s-1990s

Adder

Founding "Adder"(a.k.a. Adro), Niemoller became an established military outfitter, still supplying the SADF from time to time.

Niemoller’s businesses also enjoyed substantial commercial sales, with 'Adder' Brushstroke appearing in stores and on the pages of Soldier of Fortune in the late 80s and early 90s.

The webbing he made had already cemented its legacy, but collectors began to blow the price out of proportion. SADF Copies of the rig would go for hundreds, and genuine Niemoller rigs would go for even more.

1994

Forced to Close

The dawn of the ANC government in 1994 shuttered most of South Africa’s defense industrial base, including Niemoller’s textile businesses. At this time all of Niemoller’s manufacturing equipment was moved to his property for storage.

For a long period of time, most of the "Adder" facility stayed dormant, and genuine articles from its hayday as well as genuine 'Niemoller rigs' began to skyrocket in price with the advent of the internet and its distinct ability to allow collectors to flex & trade their gear.

Mid-2010s

Guess Who's Back?

Since KommandoStore started doing business in 2013, It's been a dream of ours to resurrect some of these collectibles from curio status back to a new life — when we got in contact with Niemoller, it wasn't long before we started talking about webbing and unearthing his now-cult-celebrated design back after decades of dormancy.

'Niemoller rigs' are without a doubt a cult-hit, but its influence has snowballed significantly.

With new enthusiasts and collectors scrounging up the last remaining curio-grade rigs on the internet, options became limited.

2013-2020

The Search For Niemoller

An average Google search brought up a minefield of low-quality, chinese-made clones that get the details all wrong — a minefield for anyone who hasn't properly done their homework.

On the contrast, we can appreciate the passion that goes into actual high-quality reproduction equipment on the market, but it's certainly scarce.

With the aid of local contacts in South Africa, we stumbled across Johann & his local business in 2021 while sourcing manufacturers for South African webbing and clothing.

2021

Roaring Back To Life

Niemoeller was approached restart textile manufacturing work in South Africa for the commercial and private security industry.

With a keen desire to start making the equipment again, Niemoeller's machines were dusted off and production began right back up...

It would take several years, but this working relationship would eventually evolve into the North Equipment brand and our exclusive & locally made gear using much of the same equipment and staff used by Adder in the 1980s.

Collaborating With a Legend

Johann himself had much involvement in this project, using his experience to pick out the best fabrics, colors, design improvements, and even suppliers to help us achieve our goals.

It's been a privilege to work with one of the most legendary figures of the Border Wars, and we hope to keep telling his story through our products for years to come.

Had to have it.

This is really cool and I'm happy finally own one after reading the history behind it. I've really gotten into reading the books about Rhodesia and the South African wars so when I found this I was psyched. I'm a GWOT veteran that joined in the 90's so I have used everything from the LCE that was being used since the 70's, the LBV, and then all the new cool new improved stuff that we got issued in the early 2000's. I would not say that this is tactically better by any means but its a piece of history and I'm a gear horder. I'm not sure how the plastic zippers would hold up under hard use and I really wish that there was another magazine pocket on each side so you could carry 6 mags instead of 4. There is room to put another mag pouch on the rear of the canteen pouch. Where did they carry their frag grenades at? there is definitely pouches that would fit smoke grenades but none that I can see that would make sense for frags. They had to have carried some of them on those missions. Anyway, this thing is really cool and I like it.

Awesome for the Waffle Rifle

I use a Steyr AUG with waffle mags, this rig carries the 42 round magazines perfectly. And the smoke pouches can also be used for 30 round magazines if you want to carry additional magazines for quick access. I can carry everything I need right on me and very impressed by the quality and design. Very excited to push this rig to the limits.

Baie Lekker!

I am a sucker for SADF kit, so when the Kommando store did their version of the classic Niemoller rig I had to grab one. Its a legacy design but it still has some relevance today.

Its well built. The pouch layout is unique and works well in a variety of situations. I like how the rear pouch is low profile and the water bottle pouches can hold loads of kit. The one piece design has both pros and cons but is quite versatile if you take the time to figure it out. It also works really well with a chest rig especially micro rigs or P83/ P84.

A couple of minor issues, the fixlok clips work well on the ammo pouches but limit the usability of the smaller utility pouches. There's a few ways to carry smaller radios but for larger ones you will need to figure something out. You can add a pouch to the knife section if you want to increase capacity.

Sizing can be awkward for taller skinny/ lanky folks but if you wear the rig with the utility pouch at the small of the back you will be fine. The padded belt and harness are pretty comfortable and the wide straps keep things reasonably stable.

Its great Komandostore have bought these back and very cool that they have worked with Johann.
