After months of stocking some of the crazier examples of Alpenflage, we've finally got some of the more (relatively) sensible pieces of the later model "M83" variants.

Alpenflage, also called TAZ 83, Pizza Camo, and what we've dubbed "Casserole Camo" was issued on different pieces of gear from the late 50s to the early 90s. In fall and early winter foliage the pattern performs at its best, matching the conditions of the Swiss Alps closer than other times of the year. When it hit the surplus market in the 90s, outside of its natural environment in the alps, it stuck out like a sore thumb — in both cool factor and pattern. It continues to intrigue curious surplus collectors and has amassed quite the diehard fandom for both it's functionality and it's unique pattern.

The features and fit of the M83 pants are surprisingly familiar and sensible to most European combat pant counterparts of its time. It features two front hand pockets, a hook and loop secured rear pocket, zippered fly with a single-snap waist, suspender loops, and reinforced thighs. Like its esoteric brother, it has two big cargo pockets on each leg, but without all of the doodads. Interestingly enough, it features an elastic waistband in addition to belt loops for maximum comfort - a nice touch on something as usually deranged as Swiss surplus.

Specs
  • 50/50 Cotton/poly construction
  • Zippered fly with single snap waist closure
  • Elastic wasitband
  • 2 large cargo pockets
  • 1 rear hook and loop closed pocket
  • 2 front hand pockets
  • Reinforced thigh & knee panels

Sizing

Sizing for these pants is the typical Waist/inseam system, both in native metric sizing  in centimeters (disgusting), and glorious translated Imperial inches. Something to note on the M83 Field Pants is the elastic waist- users with waist sizes between 30"-34" were able to wear the size 44 waist comfortably.

Model is 6' tall, with a 34" waist. He wears a 44/72 comfortably.

Excellent

  • Lightly used and well cared for.
  • Alpenflage Pattern remains vibrant.
  • Perfectly functional with either minor or no cosmetic blemishes, abrasions, or other signs of use.

Good

  • Weatherproofing panel may be worn.
  • Minor cosmetic blemishes, abrasions, or other signs of use. This includes fabric repairs done in the field.
  • May exhibit writing and/or markings, including rank, serial numbers, etc.

Balling on a Budget

Needed a pair of pants for outdoor use that could also support a battle belt and that also fit me, which is a tall order being I’m 6’5” and wear 34/34 (really a 35/35 but that doesn’t exist lol). The fit is exactly as advertised - the elastic waist provides enough give to comfortably accommodate a slightly larger waist (as mentioned) but is still sturdy enough to support use with a belt load out. I still have what I can only describe as a full range of motion when wearing the pants, so nothing to note there. Overall; the fit is near perfect for me (and perfect for what it’s advertised as), the drip is real, and the value is unmatched at $23 shipped.

overall pretty good

i love the pattern (as i've bought the parka) and they feel really nice. the only reason i'm giving it 4 stars is they are way too long for me, but i'm a 5'6 manlet so i expected them to be a little big.

Pizza camo is chad

It's simple, pizza camo is weird, but it does one thing good. That's is be unique in the camo world . These pants are comfy, durable and have plenty of pockets to carry goodies. I imagine theses will serve you well on a hiking trip or range day. Highly recommend if you collect camouflage or just want a good pair of pants

Fits great, very comfortable. Deep pockets that close with snaps that i find better than buttons.
