The hatchet is one of humanity’s oldest and most useful tools. In fact, primitive sharpened-rock hand axes were used by our ape-like ancestors before homo-sapiens ever walked the earth.

Today, the hatchet remains an essential bushcraft and survival tool — a small piece of metal insurance promising shelter, fire, and a good night's sleep outdoors.

Apparently, the Swiss government bought a warehouse full of these things and never used them. We just so happen to know a guy who bought that warehouse, and...

Well, we thought we'd give them a try.

Notes From The Warehouse:

From what we can tell, these hatchets are good to go, but here's a few things to note:

  • They come unsharpened for safety while transporting
    • Visit a local knife/tool sharpener and they'll get this bad boy ready to go. If you try and cut with a dull edge you may cause damage to the handle!
    • Maintaining an edge is easy with a "puck" sharpener, also called a honing puck.
  • Once sharpened, get a sheath so you can carry it on your kit or in your pack without worry.
  • Don't be afraid to sand/refinish the handle if the texture isn't to your liking!

Does choppy stuff

This thing is sharp as all get out. With the exception of those creeps @ Davos the Swiss can’t seem to get anything wrong.

Pretty good quality

The axe is of decent quality. Mine had a bit of wobble in the head that I managed to wedge and sure up. I’m sure it’s from the dry atmosphere out here in the desert. The head is a bit soft though. Took it to my grinder to sharpen it and it wasn’t sparking like high carbon steel would but I’m sure it’ll hold the edge well enough for what I need it for. Just means the blade won’t chip.

bargain for the price, elbow grease required

needed a hatchet for the sake of having a hatchet and jumped on this deal when i saw it. axe head was a little loose (its been sitting in a crate for god knows how long so this is to be expected) and the edge was pathetically dull, but maybe its good they shipped it that way. could not chop the box it shipped in which was a little disappointing, but has the potential to be a serious tool with a sharpener. handle is stiff so i dampened the impact force it with some khyber pass tape, and i'm pleased with the result. not for pencil wrists, so do some forearm exercises if you dont have any. that's both advice for this product and for your general life. comes with a rubber blade cover which is nice if you dont want to buy/have a sheath. happy with my purchase

Big beefy boy

Hatchet head is great for the price and gets the job done. The handle however was loose and S T I C K Y, but both can be pretty easily fixed by user

Great axe

Solid axe for cheap, splits wood and other softer materials.
