Current issue for the Austrian "Gebirgsjäger" mountain troops, this boot is unparalleled in alpine luxury.

A staple in the Austrian boot lineup, the heavy alpine boots made for the Bundesheer by a variety of contractors have undoubtedly one of the finest pedigrees in alpine warfare. They're a great balance of classic boot design and ruggedness but with modern features like speed lacing that make them ever applicable.

The interior is completely lined with high quality glove-like leather, and the exterior a hard-wearing full grain cowhide. Austrian boots have the reputation of being worn for several deployments, either being passed down to the next group of boot camp grunts, or thanks to a recent change in law, taken home by those who wore them.

In the winter time, the supreme waterproofing and classic "vibram style" sole are a godsend. Not exactly ideal in the summer, but mountain warfare isn't all that warm anyways...

We think you'll end up agreeing with the Austrians — 'hand me down' is a compliment to how long this boot will last.

Specs

  • Hook Grommets
  • 2mm thick leather construction, full grain cowhide
  • Insulated tan leather lining along the entire throat
  • Full gusseted tongue
  • Partially perforated ankle vents lets perspiration though but keeps the environment out
  • 10”-11” tall covering and supporting the entire ankle
  • Reinforced toe cap
  • 4 rows D-ring and 5 rows of hook style speed lacing grommets

Breaking in your boots

Generally, these Austrian boots have already seen some use. This does mean that the leather is not as stiff as new boots, but a breaking-in period is still recommended.

To break in your boots, wear them as often as possible over a one-to-two-week period of regular activity (think grocery store trips, not hiking trips or guerrilla warfare). Use good, full-length wool socks, and take note if you feel any "hot spots" while walking around. Friction between your foot and the boot causes blisters. Breaking in your boots should help with this.

If hot spots persist, silk or synthetic "liner socks" (worn under your wool ones) are a cheap and easy way to protect your feet. They are freely available at most outdoors stores.

Sizing

The Austrian Ranger runs true to size. If you plan to wear your boots with a thick insole and medium/thick socks, buy one size bigger.

For those with wide feet, you should follow your general style of fitting into normal shoes.

If it's good enough for the Austrian military...

Most likely good enough for me.

Quite comfy and fashionable. Work well with tight pants especially. ;)

I live in a place that has ZERO tolerance for the snow. Even 1/4" of the snow is gonna mess up the whole infrastructure and ruin the day of 3 million people. Worst case scenario, I may have to WALK back home... it's gonna suck, but I'd rather suck comfortable.

Should I buy a used boot and a discussion on condition

I am going to be a little long-winded here, so the short version is yes, you should purchase a used boot and always purchase the best condition for your intended purpose and purchase the best that you can afford. Always trust Ivan! I have been told repeatedly that you should never buy used footwear, because it’s already molded to someone else’s feet. Having been warned several times, but with Kommandostore having an epic sale on Austrian boots, I decided to give it a try. I was torn between purchasing this boot in good or excellent condition and the paratrooper boot in excellent condition. Because I was uncertain of the outcome, I decided to go cheap. The boot I purchased was around $40 and the excellent condition boots were in the $60-80 range. First, a discussion of condition. The boots arrived with only a little dirt on them, and I thoroughly cleaned them and followed with leather conditioner. The uppers are in amazing shape and look to me like the product pictures. The sole are a different matter. I am including pictures side-by-side with my last pair of old school backpacking boots. They are clunky 5 pound monsters and have 250 miles on them from a 21 day trip in the Colorado Rockies. Excluding another 30 miles of break-in and occasional wear during the winter, that is the only use they’ve had. In comparison, the soles on the Austrian boots are similar and appear to have easily double the wear. These boots were manufactured in 2020, but have at least 500 miles on…

      DAS BOOT

I have been on the hunt for a good hiking boot for awhile but I'm poorer than Uncle Sasha during the Holodomor so I waited patiently for KommandoStore to release footwear. I am not disappointed. The Alpine Ranger boot is awesome for any hikes up inclines or just overall everyday wear. Mine came with one lace hook missing but no issues! Even with the hook missing I am still able to skip a cross and it performs well and stays tight. I used Walmart hiking boot laces for the missing bootlaces(honestly not terrible). My ONLY issue is the boots tread. I work in a tractor factory so the slippery floors are not the perfect environment for the boots when I wear them there but they have no issues with gripping ladders esc.

A big plus to this boot is the breathability, it is good in warm weather and can get that airflow needed and in winter time, with some wool socks can perform wonderfully to insulate your foot.

So overall 9.5/10 I say Vörwarts Kamaraden!

P.S I will be doing some LARPing in the Swiss Alps next year. I'm excited to test durability there.

P.S.S: Sexy picture for all you ankle fans 😏
