In 2021, we took it upon ourselves to do a major redesign of the P83 Chest rig to give it the upgrade it deserved, which we then dubbed the "Pattern 84". Since its introduction we've used our rig extensively in order to figure out what design improvements we would like to implement. Most importantly, this iteration focused on customer feedback first. 

While we're far from believing the chest rig is a dying breed, in fact, we think it's more popular than it's ever been. But we just can't ignore the real juggernauts of tactical gear industry. Everyone has a plate carrier. And what better place to use the universal mag pouches from the P84 2.0 Chest rig...

Multi-Platform

The P84 Placard features heavily reinforced magazine pouches with elastic retention, overbuilt closures, and ample drainage.

Fully compatible with magazines from nearly every semi-automatic rifle in common use — no inserts or addons needed.

Both sides of the Placard feature small utility pouches, perfect for multitools, compact folding knives, and double-stack 9mm pistol mags.

Bombproof Construction

Heavy bartacks, reinforced closures, and slick Cordura nylon keep your equipment secure even in the most adverse conditions.

Every hook-and-loop contact area is overbuilt, and all load bearing areas are reinforced with machine sewn bartack stiches. P84 Placard is roll, slide, and drag-proof. 

Mission Configurable

The placard is swift clip compatible (and somewhat Crye compatible as well) using its adjustable height buckles and Velcro one wrap straps.

The rig is also fully 'dangler' compatible thanks to a hook and loop pocket underneath the magazine cells.

Where We Began...

In 1983, the first well-known modern chest rig was made somewhere most people wouldn't expect — South Africa. The SADF's "Pattern 83" brought unparalleled versatility with multiple weapons platforms without the need for modification in the field.

In the age of proprietary inserts & awkward adjustments, we thought we should base a do-it-all design off of something that worked.

All Pattern 84 products are designed with this in mind. long lasting durability, tried-and-true 'flap' retention with the help of modern elastic, and no further purchases necessary to make it fit your favorite mags.

Multi-Platform

Not every plate carrier features the same type of attachment system, but the P84 placard doesn't care.

'Ride Height' of the entire placard can be raised or lowered with ease to suit your needs and can even be used without the buckles in a pinch.

Want To Go 'Micro'?

The placard comes complete and ready to mount on your favorite carrier out of the box, featuring full compatibility with 'dangler' pouches.

But if you want to convert it into a 'micro' standalone chest rig, 4 attachment loops on the edges can be used to attach your favorite shoulder harness & backstrap.

What Magazines Fit In P84?

If you're using a popular, semi automatic magazine-fed rifle, odds are P84 fits at least 6 of your mags. Want to know for sure? We've tested dozens of different platforms and detailed our results below.

In most cases we reccomend the standard 2 magazines per cell for a total of 6 mags. This will work with nearly all metal and polymer 'AR-15 type' mags on the market. However you can chose to 'overload' each mag cell with 3 standard capacity metal STANAGs for a total of 9 magazines.

Note: When overloading, we recommend inserting magazines in a front-to-back order, Not all polymer mags are 'overload' compatible.

AR-Adjacent platforms with similar magazines such as the 30/35 rd. 5.56 Galil, HK93, G36, and others will fit at least 6 mags, but due to the contours of some of the magazines, you might find trouble stacking more than 2 in a pouch.

Longer magazines like the 40 Round Magpul PMAG might have a little trouble fitting in the placard. If you're crazy and use the Surefire 60-round 'quad stack', we tested that too and it fits snugly. each mag cell can fit 1x 60 rounder plus 1 standard capacity STANAG.

Each mag cell holds 2 magazines comfortably. Standard Capacity AKM, AK101, and AK-74 Magazines will fit just fine. Plastic, metal, and Bakelite all work, and P84 2.0 makes it much easier to re-index these mags than 1.0.

We also tested 40rd 7.62 and 45rd 5.45 RPK mags. While they physically fit inside the pouches, 7.62x39 40 rounders can't take advantage of the flap closure. Retention is acceptable thanks to the elastic, but it certainly isn't a "jumpable" configuration.

It's much the same story for 5.45 45 rounders — they fit side by side better than the x39 mags, but still can't take advantage of the flap closure.

P84 accommodates straight walled 20 round .308 mags for the AR-10, MR308, FN FAL, and SCAR-17 without issue. The rig will comfortably fit the standard 2 per cell for a total of 6 mags. For the HK G3, due to the contours of the magazine, we don't recommend double-stacking.

We've tested the much less common SCAR & FAL 30-round magazines, and they also fit without issue, even with baseplates attached.

Magazines such as those found in HK MP5s, B&T GHM/APC/TP Platforms, CZ Scorpions, Grand Power Stribogs, UZIs, Colt AR-9s, and Glock 'stick' type mags will fit, but with a catch: They must be placed side by side in order to maintain retention.

The best way to run PCC magazines for maximum retention is to place 4 in each main mag cell.

Results may vary with magazine extensions and different types of base plates. Compact pistol magazines, such as those used by the Glock 19, may be too short to use effectively in P84's main pouches, but will fit in the multitool pouches if you want to carry them on your rig.

P84 Design Philosophy

The process of modernizing a design like this is a balancing act. Change too little and there’s no benefit to the end user. Change too much and you might ruin what made the original good.


In our view, almost everything about the P83 rig was done right the first time. The philosophy of the SADF is clear, and we agree with their conclusions. We were careful not to reinvent the wheel with P84 — instead we focused on improving what was already there, and putting our customers first when considering any changes.

Armor Accomodation

The explosion in popularity of plate carriers for the everyman in recent decades has had an enormous impact on all tactical gear — but we didn't think yet another plate carrier system on the market was necessary for us to make just yet.

The P84 placard is made to become your go-to for your existing plate carrier without specializing itself into a corner.

Superior Versatility

P84 strives to be anything but 'single purpose'. The placard has the ability to be turned into a 'micro rig' on demand and accept 'dangler' & 'wing' attachments.

It's a blank canvas for you to fit into your existing gear arsenal, or start fresh with something simple & adaptable.

Platform Compatibility

Like the original, P84's specially designed magazine cells accommodate almost all semi-auto rifle mags. No inserts or extra gimmicks needed.

We've certified many different types of magazines, but the sky is the limit — in a pinch, even pistol caliber carbine mags fit.

The pattern 84 fucks... just like your mom did in '84 during that Van Halen concert. This baby can kit 2 AKM mags in each mag pouch. It can fit 2 40 round pmags in each mag pouch and THE FUCKING FLAPS CLOSE. This placard lets you experience the weight of carrying a child by fitting 3 30 round AR mags in each pouch. THATS 270 ROUNDS ON YOUR CHEST. I still havent mentioned the two utility pouches. I fit a multi tool and Ole Penjamin Franklin in those. It has adjustable ride height, attachment points to make it a chest rig, and I got mine in M81 (God's Plaid) and it is MUAH chefs kiss. 🤌 the only thing I would change is the size of those utility pouches. (Size does matter) a little wider and those pouches would fit a TQ. If your looking for a solid flapped mag placard this is it. WAIT! THE FLAPS themselves have something worth mentioning. I think they sewed in a piece of bungee within the flap about a half inch to the edge that makes a really good thick pull tab. I have not seen any that anywhere else and thought it was cool.

Near perfect

Very well built. I’d say the most beefy construction of any chest rig/placard on the market. The fact that you can actually fit two mags of anything platform is another plus. My ONLY gripe is I wish the top two tabs, for accepting buckles, were angled so the shoulder straps of your choosing wouldn’t bind up. Strongly recommend regardless though.

Best all around Placard

I've bought two of these placards and they work wonders. I used to buy 2 placards, one for M4 mags and another for 308 mags Everytime I was building a new plate carrier but ever since I bought these I've never had to deal with that issue again. Now it's just one and done!!!

762 AND 556

Being able to double stack FAL mags and immediately switch to double stack 556 Pmags or even triple stack STANAG, is gangster as hell. I love it. Also, not being married to a single attachment type is also really cool. Swapped the swift clip for G-hooks to use on my Agilite KZero. Super easy. Need the chest rig now.

Awesome pouch. Incredible quality.

I love the color and design of this thing. Only issue was the pouches take some breaking in with 7.62 mags. Retention is very tight on bigger mags. Other than that though it’s a top notch piece.
