A contemporary of our Austrian M75 field shirt and pants, this rucksack was pressed into service in the 1980s. The design might be as dated as classic rock, but the need for reliable storage is timeless and this bag delivers with a carrying capacity of 45 liters (roughly the size of a medium ALICE pack) making it an excellent choice for a multiday hike or camping trip.
The main compartment is covered by a flap, topped with a sturdy grab bar, and secured by two webbing straps that can be tightened to hold your gear down. Once you undo the metal buckles and flip the top open, you'll be greeted with not one but two layers of drawstring closures, which once tightened ensure your cargo won't be going anywhere. Inside is a waterproof base layer, and along the back of the bag is a pocket large enough for a blanket.
Surrounding the main compartment are three pockets, two on the sides and one on the back, each secured with their own straps as well. Each pocket has a drain hole as well, so even if any water gets in by chance, it won't accumulate.
The rucksack's strap system is connected via two hooks joining the top of the bag and the yoke and another two at the bottom. Rounding things out is the third set of hooks, meant to attach to a pistol belt. The straps themselves are also thick green webbing, with some padding along the shoulders. The entire system can be removed and swapped out if you have a favorite set of shoulder straps or backpack frame as your preferred alternative, giving you plenty of room for customization.
