The E-Tool (or entrenching tool) is an invention that can be traced as far back as the Roman Empire's "Dolabra" multipurpose mattock and has become one of the trademark pieces of military surplus that LARPers and survivalists can't get enough of — it's easy to see why.
Used for its namesake for digging trenches, it can also be used to make latrines or using the spade's edges for chopping wood & branches. Contemporary E-Tools such as this one have the advantage to fold down small to be easier to carry than a mattock or hatchet.
This Dutch variety seems to follow the standard NATO pattern for E-Tools featuring a full metal D-handle & serrated spade with a plastic tube and locking nut that screws loose to allow the spade and handle to articulate fully open in "shovel" position, partially open for use as a light mattock, and shut for compact storage.
It's in classic OD green for any market gardening purposes (we'll see you on pl_hightower) and comes in its factory packaging. Being made for the military and not the boomer-prepper crowd, it's bound to outlive you, the trench you dig, and the guy who's trying to dig an assault trench to the trench you dug.

Dutch Tri-Fold E-Tool Shovel
I just needed something to throw in the car for general utility purposes and this fit the bill. It also fits in the USGI E-Tool pouches. Because these are factory new, they are not sharpened and you can run your fingers on the edges without cutting yourself. If desired, one could grind an edge although this will chip the paint. Oh no!
...Mostly I just wanted a shovel for my car for my adventure-ish car for winter.

My e-tool appears to be completely unissued - or if it was issued it went to someone who never used it for its intended purpose - sending insurgents to the next life.
It’s a very close Dutch rendition of the American-style tri-fold e-tool, continuing the proud Dutch military tradition of looking at whatever the British or Americans are doing and saying “Ja, we’ll have more or less that.”
Fortunately for us, this is a very competent copy of a very competent design - ready to do bushcraft, field craft, camp craft or any other dirt related endeavor for decades to come.
Received only a few days after ordering, and it is just fantastic
Dated 2023. Doesn’t look like it was ever issued. Will make a great car shovel for emergencies.
