The M40 gas mask was designed as a direct follow up to the M17 that had been in service for nearly 30 years. The M17s were uncomfortable, cumbersome, and didn't have the greatest seal design. It was time for a replacement.
In 1984, the U.S. army began designing an entirely new mask that wouldn't have these problems. Several experimental versions were deployed but not until after the gulf war, where finally the M40 took the place of the M17 for future conflicts. The M40 (or, rather, M40A1) that we know today was updated in the mid-1990s, and became the main mask for the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, and also the Navy in special cases. Officially replaced by the M50 in 2009, it was fully phased out of service by 2017.
The M40 Design proved to be much more capable in combat than the M17 and as a result, became the host of many accessories like optical inserts, chemical hoods, ballistic lens outserts, and many other situational accessories.
So what do we have here, then? essentially, an exact copy of the mask, made by 3M. Same molds, same construction, but a pedigree for safety gear like few other companies out there. 3M also has a vast array of accessories built specifically for the mask, and a lot of the accessories are compatible across other popular mil-spec gas masks. MSA's hand in development makes it compatible with some MSA accessories such as the Voice Amplifier and CamelBak Adapter we have offered in the past.
All that, and you aren't getting a pre-breathed-and-sweated-in crusty surplus mask from some random guy on eBay. You're getting a brand-new, 3M-Built Gas mask based on a design used for nearly 30 years in multiple branches of the U.S. Military.

These M40 masks are brand new. Most of the masks we have in our inventory also include the box, but not all of them will include it. The condition of those that are in the box vs. not in the box is Identical.
Fit and Seal Testing:
Testing the fit and seal of your respirator is important. Every face and head is unique, and what may work on one person may not work on you. Because of this, it is crucial to inspect and leak test your M40 mask prior to use.

very nice thing, like it a lot- got to wear it doing retail warehouse work during the varus and it kept chucklefugs away so I could actually pretend to get some work done
It is the comfiest mask I've had, but I only have 1 other gas mask. the straps using cloth instead of rubber is great, cloth doesn't pull and yank on your hair and the elastic in it stretches better.
The Comfortable gas mask I've ever used, doesn't fog, doesn't pitch, easy to put on, easy to take off.
Seems in good condition, no weird smells, fits well.
I haven't tested with a filter yet, but the seals seem good.
