Prepare to DYE

DIY Dyeing has been a core part of surplus ownership for as long as military surplus has been hitting the shelves worldwide. It's a way to give a unique look to an old piece, often resulting in something you can wear around every day without getting an accidental "thank you for your service" at the grocery store.

KommandoStore's love affair for flecktarn is so old it predates most of the big internet surplus stores — when we were a young business, we wanted to elevate above surplus reselling and create something ourselves, so naturally we turned to upcycling our favorite garment.

The Flecktarn Parka.

The Secret Formulae

The first problem we encountered: how do we make it different than all the newly made flecktarn gear on the market? Even back in the mid 2010s, you could get high spec tac gear in Germany's best camo.

So blazing a trail ourselves with an army of washing machines and pallets full of test subject parkas, we actually dove down the rabbit hole to make a high-quality, mass produced, and permanent color change.

The result gave birth to the name "Versengtarn", meaning "Scorched Camo" in German.

How Ivan Dyed: The Story of Versengtarn Camo

Hibernation & Return

Versengtarn would end up being so ambitious that we only ever ended up doing one batch. Finding manufacturers that were willing to work with surplus garments was next to impossible, and we had bigger fish to fry as the store continued to grow.

But every now and then, old-guard customers and even new employees would wonder whatever happened to it. "The "Full" Versengtarn must come back", they'd all say.

After over half a decade, we're so glad we're making it again — It's a symbol of how far we've come since our days in a tiny warehouse in Minnesota...

Drip

Excellent, absolutely love it. Goes hard, fits perfectly, the Velcro for patches is great, pockets are quite large, zippers are very strong

Has pen loops in left chest pocket, great.

I will kill Tony Tortellino

if he sends me another email. The jacket is fire though, you should feel bad for not buying one. Especially now that they are all gone. You will live with this regret for the rest of your life.

Der Driptarn

The parka came out pretty nice, it fits well, has many roomy pockets, and the camo looks fantastic. The only complaint I have is that the zipper for my parka causes a bit of frustration. I found I had to properly line up the zipper perfectly otherwise it just won't zip up. I'd give this product a 4.5 if I were given that option.

Warm, black, and comfy

I ordered this jacket while I was on deployment two years ago. I’m happy to receive it finally. Good for staying warm and doing stealth Psyops. 9/10 jacket but a 3/10 wait time.

26 Months was well worth it!

I preordered as soon as I got the email, way back in March of 2018. The dye job on the parka is excellent, if a little darker than I thought it would be. In certain light, you can just barely spot the tell tale Flecktarn pattern that we all know and love. The added Hunter pouch on the back of the parka is spacious, and could hold many pouches of Zibby Beans, and the added PSU(?) style pocket on the right shoulder is an excellent addition. The feature that has cemented as my Doomer Night Walk™ certified jacket is the reflective panels on both wrists and the bottom of the parka. This gets a perfect 5/7 from me
