Whether you enjoy fictional Orwellian surveillance states or their real life counterparts, the best way to disguise yourself from the lizard people that are puppeteering behind the scenes is covering your face. And what better way to hide your face than a Soviet PMG Hungarian 70M gasmask.
Almost a direct copy of the Soviet PMG style, the Hungarian 70M follows the same design as its counterpart. The flat circle eye pieces are subtly angled to aid in the use of optical equipment. The were supposed to come with special lenses for soldiers with glasses, but just like food in North Korea, there wasn’t any ever produced. The main noticeable difference between the 70M and the PMG is the voice diagram. The 70M voice diagram has smaller holes and more of them compared to the PMG. Additionally the 70M is made out of a slightly different rubber composition. Other than these slight differences the masks are identical.
The rubber hood is reminiscent of the Soviet GP5 but with cutouts on the top for cooling. Just in case any of you happen to be doing some “cardio” with this particular mask. No judgment here. Use the adjustable strap on the back to get snug, but with correct sizing it’s not necessary.
70M Filter
The 70M filter is composed of mostly sulfite cellulose but does also contain 4-6% asbestos in filters made before 1987 (usually, Hungarian record keeping wasn’t the best apparently). These filters are obviously for display use only. No mesothelioma claims will be accepted.
Three markings can be found on the filter
- Manufacturing year is under the bottom cap (87=1987)
- The four digits on the lower side are the month and day (04 16= April 16th)
- The printed digit is the serial number (18th series of 1987)
The filter thread is 40mm GOST thread so it will not work with 40mm NATO threads. Well, maybe one time…
Reconditioning
Sometimes surplus arrives to us in rather unexpected conditions. These Hungarian 70M gas masks were a prime example. Like a diamond in the rough, they were quite dirty after spending most of their lives living in a long forgotten Hungarian warehouse. But with a little elbow grease and quite a bit of scrubbing these gas masks were lovingly reconditioned by the warehouse Ivans. Remember, adopt, don't shop.

Sizing
These masks use the Soviet gas mask sizing system, which we've translated into US sizing (roughly).
While all sizes can fit, the proper size is the one that seals to your face and doesn't squeeze your skin too hard. A size small might fit but that doesn't mean it covers the vital parts or contours of your face to create a proper and safe seal. Size medium or large seems to be the catch all with small and extra large being extremes. Gas mask sizing is tricky. The size that fits is "the size that fits."
Don’t be afraid to size down in order to ensure an airtight seal and fit, or for fun
Condition
Masks have been reconditioned, and are in excellent condition. Masks have been washed and scrubbed. Rubber, straps, and lenses have been cleaned, and surface corrosion on hardware removed to the best of our abilities.
